Ohio man fails in attempted murder-suicide after wife survives shooting

WELLINGTON, Ohio — A 49-year-old man went to a smoke shop where his wife works and shot her several times before turning the gun and killing himself Tuesday afternoon, police say.

Scott Brant died from his injuries in the shooting that happened about 4 p.m. at the Boo-Tique Smoke & Vapor on North Main Street near Maple Street, Wellington Police Chief Tim Barfield said. His wife survived.

Police received a call about someone firing shots inside the shop.

Investigators learned Brant drove to his wife’s work and shot her before he turned the shotgun on himself, Barfield said. Paramedics pronounced Brant dead at the scene.

Brant’s wife, who was not identified, is at MetroHealth with non-life threatening gunshot wounds to her hip and pelvis, Barfield said.

Investigators found more ammo and another weapon in the car Brant drove to the smoke shop.

Brant had recently been charged with domestic violence and was under investigation for possible weapons offenses related to the domestic violence incident.

Owners of the smoke shop released a statement asking for everyone to pray for those involved.

“We, as a business, will have no further comment on this situation and we ask that you respect the privacy of our employees at this difficult time,” the statement says. “Thank you to our customers for all of your support and concern.”
