After a police car was set on fire at the Pine Ridge Police Department in Lexington County last week, authorities are searching for an unknown man who was caught on video committing the crime.

On Friday, July 31, just after 9 p.m., a man was recorded pouring a substance from a gas can onto a Pine Ridge police car, setting it ablaze and running away. Surveillance footage of the crime was shared by the S.C. Law Enforcement Division, which is investigating the incident and seeking the unknown suspect.

“By deliberately choosing to destroy the vehicle and commit this criminal act, this individual purposefully put members of the Pine Ridge community in additional danger by significantly reducing law enforcement’s ability to respond to an emergency,” Lt. Brad Keller of SLED’s Arson Unit said in a news release Friday.

At a minimum, setting fire to a vehicle could result in a felony third-degree arson charge, according to the S.C. Code of Laws.

Anyone who has information about the incident or about the person involved is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME SC (888-274-6372).
