Newly released police body-cam footage shows the dramatic gunfire exchange outside a Louisville Kroger earlier this week, which culminated in the death of a man who was shooting off rounds inside the grocery store.

Officers with the Louisville Metro Police Department responded to reports of an active shooter Thursday just after 6 p.m. When they arrived on the scene, they found the suspect outside the Kroger, where he continued to discharge his firearm, Chief Steve Conrad told reporters during a press conference on Friday.

Two officers on patrol nearby — identified as Patrick Norton and Alex Dugan — were first to arrive and immediately confronted the gunman, who has not yet been identified. The bodycam video shows one them shouting and ducking for cover as he open fires at a man in a red hooded sweatshirt.

The second responder can be seen taking aim at the suspect. Someone can be heard saying “I got ‘em” and “still moving” in his body camera footage.

The gunman was pronounced dead at the scene, despite officers attempts to administer first aid and revive him.

Investigators suspect the man drove his Hyundai SUV to the grocery store and “assaulted” someone “near the meat department” before unleashing several rounds into the ceiling, Maj. Jamey Schwab told NBC News.

Schwab added that authorities are still reviewing video of the deadly incident.

It’s not clear whether the shooter’s intended target was hurt during the confrontation.

Conrad praised the officers’ quick response and credited them with preventing more bloodshed and violence.

“Last night’s incident had all of the potential to have a much more tragic outcome,” he said. “There was dozens of people in the Kroger at the time of the shooting.”

Both Dugan and Norton, who have been with department for about three years each, have been placed on administrative reassignment while the incident is being investigated.
