The three-man police force in the Colorado town of Kiowa was surprised to learn they didn’t have a job after their entire department was disbanded via text message.

KPD received the message from Town Administrator Joe Racine on Friday, informing them that the department was being shut down and that they would be laid off.

“All operations of the Kiowa Police Department have been suspended, effective immediately,” the message read.

According to Denver 7, the town of 750 people has a limited tax base, and Racine feels the county law enforcement agencies can cover the town.

In the past, the town relied on traffic fines to reach the budget in the past. However, revenue has dropped significantly in recent years.

“Kiowa certainly doesn’t have (ticket) quotas. But that was a big contributor to the town’s budget,” Racine said.
